Daniel K. Rui

not-yet-Professor of Mathematics, Pianist, and Teacher

Old "About Me"s

Written ca. late July 2019, replaced on July 8, 2021:

Hi! It's me! I am an aspiring mathematician, pianist, and composer. Born in 2003, I lived in the mountains (valleys?) of Boulder, CO until I abandoned my secondary education in favor of university. Currently, you might spot me scuttling around Green Lake or haunting the UW campus. You will find all my mathematical work in the Publications tab, and my pianistic work on the Music tab.

Back in the old days, I ran the Math Club at my high school, where I unearthed fun mathematical tidbits to lecture about, and dragged my teammates around to all the nearby math events/competitions. Now at university I'm not much able to teach anymore, being a bottom feeder and all, but at least I get to learn from people far more brilliant than myself! These days if I'm not doing math, I'm probably either being challenged mentally (both interpretations are fine, honestly), playing piano, composing (badly, but I'm trying!), or curating my collection of memes. I do enjoy tennis, but I don't get much opportunities to play nowadays (saddening indeed). I've played piano for thirteen years, and twelve of those thirteen years, I've been performing. In 2018, I played the piano for my highschool's production of the Broadway show "Next to Normal", which was, I must say, a tremendously scarring and simultaneously profound experience. All in all, my talents and aspirations lie in places that will most likely lead me to homelessness within several years -- I mean, as the adage goes, "the difference between a Ph.D. in math and a large pizza is that a large pizza can feed a family" (and I'm sure worse has been said about piano). ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

On a more serious note, I've recently been admitted to the UW CSE major, which I'm quite excited and optimistic about. A year ago, all I ever wanted to do in college was math, but after three quarters of careening through an entire biome of courses and getting blockaded and redirected by all manner of restrictions, I ended up in deciding to major in CS. Of course, I will still major in math and my goal of being a math professor still stands, but now with CS, I think a lot more doors have opened in areas that I'm still interested in.
